Opening Reception: June 3rd, 6pm-9pm

Macho Menos is a Latino queer slang play on the common Spanish phrase “mas o menos” which translates to “more or less”. This slang is used by Gay Latino men to claim their Queerness but to retain their machismo. The Macho Menos exhibition dissects and expands this term in order to examine the larger, complicated connections between queerness and machismo in Latino communities. Since birth Latinos have been taught to think in binary when it comes to gender. We cannot escape the masculine and feminine because the Spanish language is gendered. The featured artists in this art exhibition work with, against, or around gendered expectations of their respective Latino cultures. Their artwork investigates their relationship with “machismo” through the mediums of photography, painting, video, sculpture, textiles, performance and multi media. Their work explores the negotiation of the artist’s gender in relation to their Latino roots.

Macho Menos is a visual art presentation made possible by the Queer Cultural Center’s Creating Queer Community. Since 1998, QCC has organized an annual month-long National Queer Arts Festival. To date, these Festivals have presented more than 800 different events featuring over 1000 Queer artists including Bill T. Jones, Alice Walker, Robert Rauschenberg, Meredith Monk, Adrienne Rich, Marga Gomez, Justin Chin, Thom Gunn, Cherrie Moraga and Dorothy Allison. The festival is the largest queer arts festivals in North America.

Paint The Town Red For Marriage Equality

An alternative to the HRC's Red Equal Signs

An alternative to the HRC’s Red Equal Signs

I Stand For Marriage Equality

I definitely have my problems with the HRC and don’t think marriage equality is the penultimate step in gaining full civil rights for my LGBTQI fellows, but I’ll definitely stand up for any gain that takes us one step closer to achieving said rights. We still got a long way to go and this is definitely a step in the right direction.  As for the HRC, I gotta hand it to them that it’s very clever for them to use the red equal sign as an HRC social media branding tactic crossed with a cry for equality.

Check out the equality symbol from

The American Foundation for Equal Rights is dedicated to protecting and advancing equal rights for every American.
